The world of Diablo 4 is filled with various forms of challenges that all culminate in formidable boss fights that will test your mettle, and handsomely reward you if you can overcome them. One of these bosses is Duriel, Lord of Pain, a powerful demon and Lesser Evil, much like his sister Andariel.

Defeating this boss can be quite challenging, so we've broken down all the steps needed to do so in the following sections. We will cover where you can find Duriel, how to defeat him, and of course, the valuable rewards you'll gain if you can overcome the Lord of Pain in Diablo 4.

Where to find Duriel Boss in Diablo 4

Duriel, Lord of Pain is located in the Imperial Palace, near the Residential District in Caldeum,  inside of Kehjistan. He will be encountered during Act VI as you complete the main quest, The Walls Shake. Below you can see the boss's exact location on the map. 

How to Beat Duriel Boss in Diablo 4

Duriel possesses one of the most extensive and diverse sets of moves in all of Diablo 4, which means that solely completing the story campaign might not adequately prepare you for the upcoming challenge. If you find yourself struggling, it could be beneficial to engage in additional side quests that you may have postponed until now. This will grant you extra levels and potentially better equipment.

Once you feel prepared to confront Duriel, it is crucial to be aware of the boss's moves and employ the following tips to avoid them:

  • Duriel can burrow into the ground, making it impervious to damage and resurfacing while dealing damage. Utilize this opportunity to heal and recover before resuming the battle.
  • Duriel's poisonous vomit can pose significant issues within the arena. Whenever possible, steer clear of the pools of poison and lure the demon away to disperse its attacks.
  • Periodically, Duriel will release maggots from his stomach in your direction. To execute this attack, he will retract his body and protrude his stomach, requiring players to sidestep the projectiles.
  • Additionally, Duriel possesses a melee attack where he forcefully slams his claw onto the ground. This move is indicated when he leans back significantly before initiating the attack. Therefore, when players observe him preparing for this assault, they will have sufficient time to evade it by sidestepping.
  • Additionally, Duriel can execute a devastating move where it devours the player, inflicting immense damage. This action is indicated by stomping, so create distance between yourself and the boss, and be prepared to swiftly dodge to the left or right.

    • It is crucial to maintain a considerable distance from Duriel whenever possible, although the boss chamber is filled with obstacles that may limit your ability to do so. Duriel relentlessly pursues you throughout the arena, primarily relying on his powerful melee attacks as shown above that deal substantial damage.

    Adding to the complexity of the encounter is Duriel's health bar, which consists of only two sections. This means there are fewer opportunities to replenish your health by utilizing the health potion drops from Duriel. Therefore, effective potion management and minimizing damage should form a key part of your overall strategy.

    One aspect that may not be immediately apparent is the ability to heal yourself with potions even while trapped inside Duriel's stomach. So, if you happen to be swallowed, don't lose hope. Most other attacks from Duriel can be reasonably evaded by carefully timing your dodges and maintaining distance whenever possible, so stay close, deal damage, and avoid his telegraphed attacks until this Lesser Evil falls.

    What Loot does Duriel Boss Drop in Diablo 4?

    Similar to various other bosses, Duriel drops random loot once he is defeated, however, he will drop small bundles of gold as well as 1 Legendary gear item, and 1 random rarity gear item. And after defeating him, the quest, The Walls Shake will also be completed, granting you 35,569 XP and 3,010 Gold.
