Police get tip, arrest pizzeria robbery suspect | News, Sports, Jobs

A man sought in the robbery of Serpico’s Pizzeria was arrested Monday morning when police located him in Makawao after a Maui Crime Stoppers tip.
Bail was set at $50,000 for Damion Emeson, 46, of Haiku. He was charged with first-degree robbery.
The robbery was reported at about 1:15 p.m. April 8 when a man brandished a handgun and demanded money from a cashier at the Pukalani restaurant. The robber, who was wearing a black motorcycle helmet, took an undisclosed amount of money and ran away along Old Haleakala Highway, police said.
Surveillance video from nearby businesses showed the robber getting into a silver sport utility vehicle.
On Friday, a Maui Crime Stoppers bulletin sought the public’s help in locating Emeson and his 2002 silver Toyota Highlander.
At about 9 a.m. Monday, a Maui Crime Stoppers tip reported that Emeson was sleeping in his vehicle to the rear of a property in Makawao. Police said Wailuku patrol units were immediately dispatched to the location, where they found and arrested Emeson without incident.
His vehicle was seized and towed pending the execution of a search warrant.
“We’d like to say thank you to our community who supported the investigation by offering tips and information that led to the suspect’s apprehension,” said Lt. Derrick Lopez, head of the Crimes Against Persons Unit of the Criminal Investigation Division. “Excellent teamwork by our Wailuku patrol officers, CID detectives, Crime Reduction Unit, and our Forensics Team, that contributed to a positive outcome in this investigation.”
According to court records, Emeson was placed on four years’ probation in May 2015 for two counts each of second-degree burglary and second-degree theft. He also has convictions for shoplifting and fourth-degree criminal property damage.
